In the late 1980s there were possibly only two or three car supermarket-sized sites in the UK. it was still early days in terms of the concept, but even then it was clear that there was a future for this new generation of super sites.
It was decided that the future success of Direct Cars would rest upon the acquisition and development of just such a site. Because of expansion in other areas of the group, due consideration could not be given to the plan until 1992, whereupon a greenfield site was earmarked as a strong possibility. This site, a little over two miles from the group's first premises (opened back in 1975) was successfully acquired and the result is what we see today.
Growth was steady in the first three years, but climbed dramatically when Direct Cars became one of the very first dealers to recognise the potential of the then-new phenomenon of importing new cars from the continent. For the first time in decades, new cars were available to UK buyers at cheaper European prices. Within months, Direct Cars became one of the biggest new car dealers in Sheffield.
Since 2000 Direct Cars has held its position as one of the country's leading car supermarkets, building upon its huge customer base and great reputation. Expect to see more developments as we identify other areas to improve the business and offer more cars and even better deals.
