For the complete grown-up driving experience, the higher-number series of cars such as the 3-Series, 5-Series and 6-Series models provide an opulent and explosive drive, in particular for A-road and motorway journeys, with a refined engine to boot. The 1-Series hatchback is a smart drive for its type, the first car of its kind to provide rear-wheel drive and sports a range of powerful engines from 1.6-3.0 litres.
For those conscious about clean running, the newer 1-Series features hybrid engines which burn cleaner fuel and won't burn a hole in your wallet.
On the safety side of things, BMW scores top marks in Euro NCAP - expect airbags from every conceivable direction on the higher series range, plus some excellent failsafes under the bonnet on the four wheel drive models X3 and X4 designed to keep you in control.
The list of standard features and extras you can expect is too long to even attempt here, but it's safe to say even entry level models will come well-equipped. For the full performance in specs, the 7-Series (also known as the E65 or E66 models) is the top of the range in BMW's line, a saloon that comes in the whopping 6 litre V12 petrol motor or a 4.4 litre turbodiesel engine.
