The Ford Fiesta is very much an automotive institution. Established in 1976, it quickly set the precedent for an economical supermini. Comfort, quality and affordability have always been the key facets of any Ford Fiesta throughout its three decades and seven rebuilds.
Today the Ford Fiesta is as popular as it was on its original release. Technology has come on a long way though since the old 3-door 4-speed original, as has the design. Both the Mk6 and Mk7 Fiesta can now be found in 3 and 5 door versions, taking it from being exclusively a supermini to more of a reduced hatchback. The modern day incarnation features similar characteristics to the Ford Focus hatchback, just as the original was based loosely around the incredibly popular Escort; however, that is pretty much where the similarities end.
Neither the third generation Mark 6 Ford Fiesta Introduced in 2002 nor the brand new 2008 fourth generation Mark 7, share any of the characteristics of the original model, bringing the Fiesta right into the 21st Century. The latest models share their body structure with the equally popular Mazda 2, giving it a highly angular and contemporary look and taking a step away from the more conventional Ford Focus themed styling of the Mark 6.
With modernised makeovers and facelifts, the Ford Fiesta has enjoyed something of a renaissance in the car industry. Once again it is seen as being very much a market leader within the overcrowded small car sector. This is exemplified by the Fiesta being garnered with the prestigious What Car? 'Car of the Year' award for 2009. So whilst it may be seen as something of an industry heavyweight, the newest models are, conversely enough, lighter and stronger than the previous models, despite maintaining the same size.
Whilst the up and coming Mark 7, which is still very much in its formative years, maybe grabbing awards and headlines left right and centre, the reinvention of the model very much began with the earlier Mark 6 Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2006 and with renewed design of the Mark 6 from 2005 onwards). Sliding sales that saw the Fiesta toppled from the top of the small car sales chart after 2001 were halted with the reinvention in 2006, which saw it back on top for two consecutive years.
Theres a reassuring sensibility that comes with owning a Ford Fiesta. Whilst it may not be the newest or most futuristic model on the market, its quality has never wavered during its 33 year history. With this level of quality also comes comfort, safety and reliability; making it one of the most complete packages out there in any sector. As far as small car choices, its hard to look past the market leader, which is undeniably still the Ford Fiesta.
