Following on from the huge success of the Ford Escort was never going to be a simple task; however, few would argue that has been achieved and even surpassed with the introduction of the Ford Focus back in 1998. For 32 years, the Escort had been the benchmark vehicle in the family car market, dominating hatchback, saloon and estate markets throughout its illustrious history. Today the mantle has been passed on to the Focus, which has picked up exactly where it left off, albeit with a modern design and renewed appeal.
Featuring the New Edge design philosophy that had earlier served the Ford Ka and Puma models so well in the late 1990s, the Ford Focus was seen as a huge step forward from the fairly standard styling of previous lines. Offering excellent levels of comfort throughout the car and a drive that was both safe and response, it quickly ticked all of the boxes for the traditional family car. A great performance level and affordable price band also meant that it surpassed many of its rivals from Vauxhall and Volkswagen, making the Ford Focus the pre-eminent car in the automotive industry.
The Ford Focus is undeniably one of the most complete car packages available in any class today. In terms of comfort, affordability, design, features, safety and reliability it is little short of exceptional. Each of these factors combine to create one of the coolest sensible cars of all time. It is on this solid basis that it has become the UKs biggest selling car and the leading car in terms of world sales in both 2001 and 2002.
The modern Ford Focus comes in a variety of body types, with engines and specifications to match. From the sporty Ford Focus RS to the highly practical estate models, the same core principles are maintained that have made the Focus brand so popular with people of all ages and all walks of life. The Mark 2 models have progressed a great deal from the original Mark 1, having taken over the reigns back in 2004. With a reinvented look and continued variation in engine performance and onboard features that take it forward and build upon the already impressive reputation of the original.
Safer than ever before achieving 5 stars for adult safety and the best possible results for front impact in the Euro NCAP tests and featuring the all-new Duratec engine (replacing the Zetech versions on the Mark 1), the Ford Focus has constantly evolved to further strengthen its position as the leading family car in the UK market. Maintaining the ever-competitive prices that were such a feature of the Escort before it, the Ford Focus is well on its way to eclipsing the already impressive heritage of its predecessors.
