Mazda's models are divided down through a numeric system, starting with the outstanding performance 1.3 or 1.5 litre engine of the Mazda 2, through the larger Mazda 3, which has some incredible acceleration, on to the Mazda 6, which comes in a range of hatchback, saloon and estate editions.
Despite the supercharged engines, Mazda has often been declared best in value for money when compared to similar models in class. For economy once you've hit the road, the Mazda 2 has superior fuel economy for a hatchback, averaging around 50 mpg - and even more on a diesel.
At least four stars scored on all Mazda models since 2002 at Euro NCAP for adults. Full marks went to the Mazda 5 people carrier, though the Mazda 6 scored best for child protection in its most recent test.
Expect a wide range of standards across all ranges - in particular, the Mazda 5 is highly rated as a family-friendly MPV with plenty of kit on board, including a wide range of electronic controls and gadgetry thrown in as standard. Engine specs tend to increase across the numeric model numbers, with the most popular 2.3 litre recurring across the range.
