Throughout its production during the nineties and beyond, the Nissan Almera was considered one of the most responsive family cars of its generation. The sharp handling made it the flagship car for Nissan, and its eagerly-awaited successor model, the Tiida, is expected to offer similar performance in a practical design.
More recently, the addition of the X-Trail and Terrano off-road SUVs have taken four wheel driving to the next level. Be warned - these two aren't just made for a neat ride around town; they're all-terrain monsters.
Japanese cars have a reputation for reliability, and Nissan are no exception. For a city car that has stood the test of time, the funky-looking Micra is affordable and can go the distance, providing sound fuel economy.
The modern bodywork has a much-improved safety rating than the older cramped design, and good scores have been recorded for the Micra in Euro NCAP tests, bettered only by the Nissan Note - one of the safest family city cars available.
While the Micra has a limited engine size, other models from Nissan offer powerful capacities. The large family Primera has gone from a robust eighties auto to a seriously capable modern saloon, and along with its sister model the Almera, boasts some of the best technology and specifications in its class.
