After more than a decade in production, the Peugeot 206 is still going strong. One of the lead contenders in the crowded supermini marketplace, it has held its own, even outselling some of the more established models in the field. Since 1998 the Peugeot 206 has garnered great critical and commercial acclaim for its contemporary design and va va voom attitude. As a result it has now become Peugeots top selling car of all time.
Due to end manufacture in 2010, the 206 signalled a highly successful reintroduction into the supermini category for Peugeot after the gradual fading out of the 205. With a complete design overhaul and significant facelift, it provided consumers with a viable alternative to the heavyweights in the category, the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo. Fully modernised and kitted out with the latest innovations it was, and still is an exceptional high-performance supermini.
You need look only as far as its history in the World Rally Championship for evidence of the pedigree of the Peugeot 206. Winning three consecutive manufactures titles from 2000 onwards, rallying success helped reinforce the 206 as a global brand and helped the spread of popularity within the roadcar market. 3 door, 5 door and even cabriolet models have helped spread the 206s range of influence to a wider audience than the already hugely popular 205.
So with a sleeker design, extra performance and increased versatility, the Peugeot 206 helped push forward the new and improved brand identity, paving the way for the 207 and other '07' designs. Better still, as with all Peugeots, the car is not only practical but its also affordable, both in initial price and running costs. This has made the 206 a universally viable supermini, which has again helped make a big impact on the crowded marketplace.
The 12 year run of the Peugeot 206 may come to an end in 2010, but its legacy will undoubtedly long outlast this. Making the brand competitive and sexy once again, it has helped ensure that Peugeot remain at the cutting edge of design, particularly in the economic car sector. People of all ages have fallen in love with its looks and performance, which is usually a good indication of an enduring legacy.
