How To Change a Flat Tyre

Driving with a flat tyre can be stressful. Knowing how to change it for a spare wheel can help get back on the road safely.

This step by step guide will show you how to fit your spare wheel in case of a puncture. We will take you step-by-step through the process. Having the right tools and some knowledge makes it possible to change a flat tyre in less than 30 minutes. Once you complete this task, you can continue your journey with confidence.

Step 1: Find a Safe Location

  • Safely stop the car on the side of the road, away from traffic.
  • Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers of your presence.

Step 2: Gather Tools and Equipment

  • Locate your vehicle's spare wheel, jack, locking wheel nut key (if applicable), and wheel chocks.
  • Make sure the spare wheel is fully inflated.

Step 3: Prepare the Vehicle

  • Apply the handbrake to prevent the car from rolling.
  • If your vehicle has locking nuts, use the wheel nut key to loosen them before lifting the vehicle.

Step 4: Loosen the Wheel Nuts

  • Use a wrench or wheel brace to loosen the wheel nuts by turning them anti-clockwise, but don't remove them yet.
  • It may require some force as the nuts can be tightly secured.

Step 5: Position the Jack

  • Locate the correct jacking point in your vehicle's owner's manual.
  • Place the jack securely in the designated jacking point.

Step 6: Lift the Vehicle

  • Use the jack to slowly and carefully lift the vehicle until the flat tyre is off the ground.
  • Make sure the vehicle is stable and securely supported by the jack before proceeding.

Step 7: Remove the Flat Tyre

  • Use a wrench or wheel brace to fully remove the wheel nuts and take off the flat tyre.
  • Place the flat tyre aside and out of the way.

Step 8: Fit the Spare Wheel

  • Carefully align the fully inflated spare wheel with the wheel studs and slide it onto the wheel hub.
  • Tighten the wheel nuts by hand as much as possible in a criss-cross pattern.

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle

  • Lower the vehicle with the jack slowly until all four wheels are on the ground.
  • Remove the jack and double-check that all wheel nuts are tightened properly.

Step 10: Tighten the Wheel Nuts

  • Use a wrench or wheel brace to securely tighten the wheel nuts using the same criss-cross pattern as the previous step.
  • Avoid over tightening, as it may cause damage to the studs or wheel.

Step 11: Check and Adjust Tyre Pressure

  • Use a tyre pressure gauge to check the pressure of the spare wheel.
  • Adjust the pressure if needed to match the manufacturer's recommended psi.

Step 12: Clean Up and Store

  • Remove any tools, wheel chocks, and the flat tyre from the roadside.
  • Store the flat tyre, jack, and tools securely in your vehicle.

Congratulations! You have successfully fitted your spare wheel! Remember to drive cautiously and have the punctured tyre repaired or replaced as soon as possible. We have created a guide to help you choose the right tyre for you vehicle.

It's always a good idea to check the condition of your spare wheel, jack, and tools to ensure they are in good working order for any emergency situations on the road.

Stay safe and happy driving!
