By following our top tips you can save money day to day whilst driving your car.

How to Drive Economically

2023 is now here, and with a new year comes new years resolutions. So why not make saving money a priority this year? By being conscious of how you drive can make a huge impact to your fuel consumption and ultimately your budget.

Before we get into our money saving top tips, it's important to know that your cars fuel efficiency will ultimately depend on the type of engine, fuel and drivetrain.

With that being said, here are six of our eco driving tips to help you increase your mpg & save a fortune whilst doing so, what have you got to lose?

1. Observe the speed limit

Stick to the highway code, It's no secret that keeping to the speed limit, or even slightly below, is one of the simplest ways that you can save fuel. Whilst paying attention to the speed limit you will also help to keep yourself and others safe on the roads.

2. Accelerate and brake gently

Be honest, how many times have you overtaken someone and somehow you've ended up at the same lights together? awkward..you can eliminate any awkward interactions by cutting out the habit of rapid acceleration and harsh braking.

These factors have been proven to significantly increase your fuel consumption. If you're keen to save yourself a few pounds you should apply the gas gently, building up speed gradually, and maintain a steady pace of speed. You could even go one step further by selecting a higher gear. Driving in a higher gear will drastically improve your cars fuel efficiency and therefore increase your miles per gallon, edging you closer to that wonderful extra urban figure.

3. Plan your journey

Wherever possible, you should plan your journey ahead of time. Planning ahead can help you to avoid roadworks and roads that are prone to heavy traffic. Not only will this save you time and stress due to the lack of stop and starting, it will help you avoid any unnecessary fuel usage.

4. Reduce air conditioning

It's a well known fact that the use of air conditioning uses a lot of fuel, so you should try to minimise its use. On the other hand, opening the windows when the weather is cooler or at lower speeds should provide enough fresh air to keep you cool. Finally, the air conditioning can be used when commuting at higher speeds, such as motorways & country lanes etc.

5. Maintain your car

Be sure to keep your car serviced, doing so is going to make a big difference in how your car performs from day to day. As well as significantly improving your fuel economy.

Furthermore, ensuring your tyres are in a healthy condition is not only mandatory for your safety, but will also improve fuel economy. Under inflated tyres will cause the car to use much more fuel in order to push the car forward.

By following these straight forward suggestions, your new and improved driving style will make a real difference in the amount of fuel you burn and the money you save. So you can forget about your fuel tank and focus on what's really important, your savings account.

Hopefully, these tips provide some helpful advice you can follow to help you keep more of your hard earned cash safely in your bank account.
