Failure is not an option! Check out our Pre-MoT checklist and make sure your car passes with flying colours

MOT Checklist

Getting your vehicle ready for its annual MOT inspection doesn't have to be a stressful experience. Performing these pre mot checks before your test date can improve your chances of passing and ensure your car's safety and legality. Plus you will make an mot testers life much easier!

Lights and Signals:

Make sure all lights are working properly, including headlights, indicators, brake lights, and fog lights. Don't forget to check for warning lights on your dashboard too. An engine management light will cause your car to fail its mot.

Inspect the condition and tread depth of your tyres. Make sure they are free from any cuts, bulges, or significant wear. The legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Consider replacing tyres that are close to this limit.

Test your brakes for responsiveness and listen for any unusual noises. Faulty brakes can result in an MOT fail, so make sure they are working properly.

Windscreen and Wipers:

Check for any chips, cracks, or damage to your windscreen. Also, ensure your windscreen wipers are working correctly.

Give your horn a test to ensure it's working properly. If it sounds weak or distorted, consider having it repaired or replaced.

Check all mirrors for any damage or misalignment. Make sure to securely mount them and ensure they provide a clear reflection.

Inspect seatbelts for any signs of wear or damage. Make sure they are working properly to ensure safety.

Suspension and Steering:

Check for any major faults with your suspension and steering. Excessive bouncing or stiffness could result in an MOT fail.

Fluid Levels:

Check essential fluid levels such as engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and screen wash. Top up as needed to ensure everything is working properly.

Number Plates:

Ensure you securely fit your number plates, make them legible, and ensure they are in the correct format. Replace any damaged or faded plates as necessary.

Exhaust Emissions:

If your vehicle has a high mileage, consider getting an emissions test to ensure it meets the required standards.

To prevent MOT failures and maintain your vehicle's condition, use this pre-MOT checklist to identify and fix any problems. Consult the driver and vehicle standards for further guidance. Stay tuned for more motoring tips and advice from DirectCars. Drive safe!
